Purchase fresh produce grown by your neighbors… for you

Subscribe to Levo’s local produce subscription, known as a “CSA”. We will provide you with fresh, local produce, each week to convenient locations near you in Greater Hartford. Levo’s produce is grown by your neighbors, so you know always where it comes from.

Sponsored by Hartford Healthcare

What do we mean by “neighbors”?

Levo for the last three years has been training small-scale urban growers in hydroponic farming techniques. We provide people with space, growing equipment and supplies, and training, and then pay them for all the produce they grow. Our growers either use their backyards or receive a plot at one of Levo’s neighborhood farms.

Anyone can be a grower, but Levo is focused on employing residents of Hartford, particularly those living in food deserts. In addition to Levo’s hydroponic farmers, we also purchase produce from small-scale traditional farmers in the Hartford area for specialty crops like corn or squash.

What is hydroponics?

Hydroponics is a super sustainable farming practice that removes the need for soil in farming. Instead, plants are grown in nutrient-rich water. The process saves 75% of the space and 90% of the water while cutting back on labor and maintenance costs and increasing the production of the plants by 25%.

What about the quality?

Levo is not certified organic, but we do use organic practices. We only use organic pest control methods and aim to minimize the spraying of any pesticides as much as possible. Therefore the quality of produce that you are getting from Levo is going to be as good if not better than anything organic that you are going to be able to get at your local grocery store! And it was grown no more than 30 minutes away from you!

What is the impact of my purchase?

Levo is building a simple solution to our broken food system. By purchasing from us you are supporting someone who lives right down the street from you, generating income and access to your community in Hartford. By buying a subscription you are choosing to help change the food system to be more sustainable. You are reducing the amount of packaging, transportation, and environmental damage from our current food system and supporting local solutions.

What is Levo growing?

Our “micro-farmers”, unlike traditional CSA’s will be growing only varieties that are most popular. We will grow leafy greens such as lettuce, kale, and spinach, fruits and veggies such as cucumbers, tomatoes, and squash, and herbs like basil and cilantro. While popular, root vegetables such as potatoes or carrots do not grow in hydroponics, so this year we will not be growing them in the CSA. See the monthly breakdown below.
